I offer a little hope on this dark chilly January morning. We ARE headed in the right direction. The evidence proves that. For example; it’s not as dark. Since December 21st we have seen the length of daylight extended by about an hour, and the sun is rising to 10 degrees higher into the sky at noontime. (It would be nice to see it!) It is also getting warmer. Yes, believe it! In that same time period the average high temperature has bounced back some 5 degrees; going from 31 to 36 degrees Fahrenheit. Now mind you, the temperatures in January thus far have run more than 10 degrees below that average, but we are headed in the right direction. There is still a long way to go though. Spring and summer are months away. Jesus is the Light of the world, and light brings with it heat; warmth. As we draw closer to Him, through the Word and in the Sacrament more of His Light shines onto us, into us, and reflects from us to others. Drawing closer to Christ is heading in the right direction. Heading away from the evil in the world and within us toward the goodness of God and all that he has stored up for us in His kingdom. Moving closer to God in our relationship to Jesus is our source of true hope in dark and cold times. Staying close to Jesus ensures us that whatever happens we have the most awesome and overwhelming power in the universe (which He created) right here with us, and that nothing can harm us in terms of our eternal future.
