The political conventions are over. The nominations for President of the United States have been officially made. The polls that come out every day really indicate that nobody knows where all this is going. My advice to you is to keep your head down as it’s definitely going to be a fiery ride for the next three plus months. The one thing that both parties; candidates, are constantly talking about is “change”…we need a change. I don’t think that there are all that many of us that would disagree with that premise. It’s what type of change that we want and need that throws it all into debate and argument.
The truth of the matter is the only change that will truly matter is the change made in the lives of people as the Holy Spirit works faith in their hearts through the Gospel. If you step back and impartially observe an argument over politics you will quickly come to realize that each participant is trying to change the other’s mind, and that is something that simply will never happen. In a political, or any other for that matter, debate both sides are entrenched in their viewpoints and working equally as hard to convince the other that “I am right and you are wrong!” The battle will rage as long as time and/or energy permits and once it comes to a conclusion nothing will have been settled, nothing gained.
The world is constantly changing, for the worse. The only way to significantly change it for the better is for God to change the hearts of people, one at a time, through the message of the Gospel, of Jesus. Lost in sin and unbelief our minds and attitudes are held in slavery to sin, death and the devil. Everything that we think, say and do is opposed to God and His plan for how creation was intended from the beginning to work. The plans and schemes of our one true enemy, Satan, are always directed at destroying what God has created, including all the people included in that creation. His fate has been sealed for all eternity, and so now his desire is to take as many of us with him to eternal destruction as he can.
Changing the world for the better will not, I repeat, WILL NOT, come through politics. It will come through the Gospel. Each and every enemy of God that is changed into a child of God through the power of the Holy Spirit working in the Word is one less mind that will need to be changed. Paul puts it this way in his Second Letter to the church in Corinth (5:17); “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” The thoughts, words and actions of the sinful nature, the old Adam, are to be replaced by those of Christ in our lives. He also writes to those of us who are in Christ; “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Romans 12:2) Our minds are transformed as we hear and read the Word of God, and see His will for us in it, as each and every day we become more like Jesus.
As the November election approaches, I leave you with this…Psalm 146:3-10;
“Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save. When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing. Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD their God. He is the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them-- he remains faithful forever. He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets prisoners free, the LORD gives sight to the blind, the LORD lifts up those who are bowed down, the LORD loves the righteous. The LORD watches over the foreigner and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked. The LORD reigns forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations. Praise the LORD.”
