Last night as I was heading home from the church I encountered a roadblock near the bottom of Hatch Hill. The local authorities, for a reason still unknown to me, were not allowing traffic going up the hill to venture past the turn off of Hangman Valley Road. My choice was to turn around and head back toward downtown and then up the hill, or to wind southward through the Hangman Valley then go up to Palouse Highway and turn back to the north. I chose the latter. I had plenty of time to get home, so in this instance it was no big deal to me, just a few more miles and a few more minutes. When roadblocks unexpectedly appear in our lives our attitude makes all the difference. Freaking out because of an unforeseen upset in our plans can really set us back; have an impact that lasts far beyond the temporary inconvenience or pain that the actual event produces. Keeping cool and calm…rolling with the punches shall I say…will in the end reduce the effects of the situation to their minimum potential. I’m not saying there won’t be any pain involved, just that we won’t be adding any extra to it! We all will experience trouble and tribulation in this life. It’s a given. How we respond is what sets us apart; what makes the difference. Jesus saw a cross in His path, but He knew that it was a road that He had to travel, so as the writer to the Hebrews says; “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (12:2) On the other side of that cross waited an empty tomb, and the glory of His heavenly throne forever. His route didn’t appear to be the easiest way that He could get there, but it was the only way. Last night I had a choice too, just not the one I wanted to make, but in making a choice and not being upset about it I got to experience and enjoy the beautiful lights on the hillsides of the area around the Hangman Valley Golf Course along the way.
