This morning I was greeted with the news that a young TV reporter and her almost as young photographer were gunned down near Roanoke, Virginia. Roanoke is a small city out in the western part of the state, a place not that much different than Spokane. This incident hit me even harder than recent reports of savage shootings in movie theatres, schools and other very open public places. That’s probably because for 27 years I was doing that same thing, reporting live from what seemed to be very safe and secure places. The fact that some of my colleagues, especially with nearly their entire lives ahead of them, were so brutally butchered broke my heart. The question instantly comes to mind; “Why are these things happening, and why are their more and more of them? The ultimate answer is simple, it’s because evil is on the increase in the world. It always has been and will continue to be until the day that Christ returns in judgment and removes evil from us forever. Now that doesn’t sound like a very optimistic statement, but it is a fact. Since the fall of man into sin and the corruption of the entire universe that came with it evil has growing and spreading. The influence of Satan and his demons is on the rise. Our only hope is in the One who took on evil; sin, death and the devil, and defeated them on a spring Friday just outside of Jerusalem, by dying on a horrible cross at the hands of the very people He created. The sad truth is that this world is not going to be getting better, it will be getting worse. The joyous truth is that our loving God takes even the most evil things and works them for our ultimate good (take a look at Romans 8:28), and that we have an eternal future free from any evil in the heavenly kingdom of the Lord by faith in our Savior Jesus, the place that I pray that today’s victims, Alison Parker and Adam Ward, are already experiencing and enjoying.
