Mardi Gras is over. The city of New Orleans is in the process of putting itself back together again (that will cost millions). The Season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday and for the next six weeks millions around the country will concentrate on trying to put their lives back together with pious deeds designed to impress God and the folks around them. This is a time to show how Christian we are, to live the life that God demands we live. Baloney! We can’t do that. We can’t keep the perfect Law that God gave to Moses, and to us, back on Mt. Sinai. We can’t on our own do things that please him, make him proud of us. Truth is, we don’t have to! There is One who did keep the Law perfectly, and did everything to please God and make him proud. That was Jesus. He did it all for us, so that He could give to us the gift of his perfection, a gift received by faith. That gift (cleaning us up before God) didn’t cost him millions, it cost him everything, all the way to his very life. Lent is a time to turn and leave behind, abandon, the earthly (sinful) hindrances that distract us from Christ and keep us from following in his footsteps. A practice that is good for us to engage in every day of every year.
