On yet another foggy morning in Spokane, I’m told that you’ve endured a lot of them recently, I would like to offer you some encouragement. The sun…”it’s still up there!” I know that for a fact as I witnessed all day yesterday, and the day before, and the one before that… And while here in Spokane the sun may not be visible it still wields its incredible power from the heavens above to bring daylight and offer warmth and energy to the earth. I’ll give you more encouragement. The sun will return, come back, in all its splendor and glory, once summer returns. Unfortunately, to many of us, this is exactly how we think of the Son, Our Lord and Savior Jesus. We view him as “still up there.” Up there in heaven at the right hand of the Father. Even though He’s “up there” He wields incredible power from heaven to bring light into the world, warm our hearts and energize our ministry. Oh yes, and He will come again in glory and splendor, resulting in endless summer (to me…that’s what paradise must be). That all sounds good, and is true in part, but there’s so much more to it. Not only is the Son “up there” but He’s shining down here too…all around us, in our lives. Each and every one of us Christians has his Spirit living within us from our baptism. We, the believers, are his continuing presence on earth. Not only that, but wherever his word is preached and the sacraments are given according to his command He is physically present with us…that’s what our worship is all about. That’s what make it so special. It’s where we meet with our Lord Jesus. We call it “Heaven on Earth” as wherever Jesus is must be heaven. The Son is shining today, in our lives, around our lives and from our lives. Let that brighten this day and every day. We don’t have to wait for it, him. He’s here, with us and for us!
