This afternoon, walking around the property, I was struck by how beautiful everything was. The weather was better than I ever remember in October (at least from my point of view) and the colors were tremendous. There were reds, yellows, golds and oranges in the leaves. The pines and grass were green, and the sky a vibrant blue, textured with cotton ball white cumulus clouds and wisps of cirrus on the horizon. The sunshine warmed everything to the middle of my comfort zone. I just had to consider that only God could paint such a beautiful picture, and then give me eyes that can see it in all its splendor.
Knowing what I do about the science behind the weather, geography and the complexity of our eyes makes it all the more evident that none of this could have happened by chance. There must be an intelligent designer, a good and loving God who would create all of this for our pleasure.
Then I got to thinking that there could only be one God behind all of this, not a multiplicity of deities as many want to believe. I mean, you’ve heard the old proverb “Too any cooks spoil the chowder.” When a committee decides on what something should look like the end result is usually something far short of spectacular. So I guess “The fool says in heart, there are many Gods.”
Looking at creation gives clear evidence that there is a God, a Creator, and that there is but one God, but that’s about as far as we can get with that. From there we have to ask ourselves “Who is this God?’ and, “How can I get on his good side.” That’s where Scripture, the Bible comes in. The One True God reveals himself in his Word. We can come to know him and his plan to rescue us from sin and death. But what of the scriptures of other religions? They tell a different story. God invites you to read them all, if you can find the time. His Word is the only one that is “living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12) The Bible is the only book in which the Spirit of God works to bring faith into the heart, to shine light into darkness. The Apostle Paul writes: “Faith comes through hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” (Romans 10:17). No other religion invites you to go and explore for yourself; no other stands up to honest questioning.
Then there’s the second question; how do I get on God’s good side? How do earn his favor? The answer is, you don’t! There is no way to earn your way into God’s grace. It’s given to you as a free gift and is received by faith in the completed work of God’s Son, Jesus, on our behalf.
The world often times labels us Christians as simple minded fools, unable to think for ourselves, unable to use the world’s wisdom to guide our lives. God, the Creator of all, says. ”The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” As a matter of fact God states that in three different places in the Psalms and Proverbs for extra emphasis. (Psalm 111:10, Proverbs 1:7 & 9:10) The true fools are the ones make the accusations. They’re the ones whose minds are closed.
When we marvel at the beauty of creation, which is extra special here in the Northwest, we can and do see our God. We should always be quick to give him our thanks and praise.
