That’s a song made popular by Queen back in 1977. Perhaps at the end of the Super Bowl game this past Sunday a rousing rendition of the chorus broke out at the party that you were attending. “We are the champions…of the world!” Indeed the Seahawks are the champions of the football world, but unless you were there in New Jersey as the 12th man in person, or had direct contact with the team during the season, YOU, had absolutely nothing to do with earning the victory. All you did was enjoy the journey and the outcome and join in the celebration, from a distance. All of the hard work was put in by someone else. The same can be said of our salvation. YOU, had/have absolutely nothing to do with earning that victory at all. Our Lord Jesus Christ engaged the adversaries and won the victory without any help from any of us. He took on sin, the curse of the Law upon those who don’t measure up to God’s perfect standards, death and the devil. The field of engagement was a cross just outside of Jerusalem. He remained faithful to the end…unto death…and won the victory, earned our forgiveness and salvation. All we can do is to look on, enjoy his journey and the outcome, and join in the celebration…by faith. And even that faith comes to us as a gift of God’s grace. Yes, the Seahawks are the champions, but that crown only lasts a short while, another season starts in 8 months. In Christ we are joined to the champion for all times, our crown of righteousness given by Jesus will last forever. Game’s over…we’re on the winning team!
